Overview

The Underwood International College (UIC) of Yonsei University invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of Justice and Civil Leadership (JCL) to teach and conduct research at the International Campus in Songdo, Incheon, located within the greater Seoul metropolitan region in South Korea.

Qualifications

We seek applicants with strong academic backgrounds and teaching and researching interests in Justice and Civil Leadership. We welcome applications from candidates with strong research potential and outstanding academic achievements. We are also looking for teachers and mentors who can combine a firm commitment to our students’ undergraduate liberal arts education with research interests that reflect global perspectives. As all instruction at UIC is conducted in English, candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills in English. Consistent with Yonsei University’s continuing efforts to increase faculty diversity, we encourage applications from both non-Korean and Korean citizens. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Law, Political Science or a related field prior to the appointment date beginning from September 1, 2026.

Preference will be given to candidates with excellent research or teaching experiences in one of the following areas: law, energy politics, public policy. The appointment will begin from September 1, 2026. Teaching responsibilities are typically 6 credit hours (2 classes) per semester. Compensation includes a competitive salary, health insurance, and other benefits. Additionally, non-Korean citizens not currently living in Korea are eligible for housing support (for up to 6 years), reimbursement for international moving expenses, and additional benefits.

About the JCL Major, HASS Division, and UIC

  • The Justice and Civil Leadership Major
    The Justice and Civil Leadership (JCL) major aims to develop future leaders with keen awareness of, and specialized training in, issues relating to justice for individuals and society in the public and private sectors, both domestically and internationally. The JCL major, by developing methodologies from the humanities and social sciences, allows students to acquire and deepen their knowledge in the fields of philosophy, politics, economics and sociology. In addition, through training in legal theory, legal philosophy, law and society and other related fields, the major aims to cultivate the critical civic leadership skills necessary to resolve the critical issues facing governments and civil society through public discourse.
  • The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Division
    The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Division of the UIC focuses on interdisciplinary approaches covering various fields of interest from regional studies, art, business, social sciences, and humanities. Students not only specialize in their respective fields, but also learn to explore and utilize the broader perspectives and framework that are necessary in today’s workplaces, whether it be the public sector, multinational corporations, NGOs, or academia.

    The Underwood International College of Yonsei University is a highly competitive program at South Korea’s most prestigious private university. UIC combines the intimate atmosphere of a liberal arts college with the resources of a major research university. All instruction is in English, and the student body consists of native and near-native speakers of English drawn from about 70 different countries.

Application Procedure

Interested applicants must apply online at Yonsei Faculty Recruitment Website and submit all required documents through the online system. Applications without the required documents will not be considered for evaluation. If an applicant cannot upload the original or copies of certain documents, such as publications, they must submit them via post to the address below.

  2. Copies of Certificates of Graduation & Transcripts from B.A., M.A., J.D. (if you have any) and Ph.D. (or equivalent)
  3. Ph.D. Dissertation
  4. Copies of documents proving bar membership in any jurisdiction (if you have any)
  5. Teaching evaluations (if applicable)
  6. Main research publications from after March 1, 2021
    – For main achievements (up to five), please check “Main Achievement” in the List of Research Records of the List of Publication Form.
    – Either the originals or the copies of applicant’s five main publications published after March 1, 2021 should be uploaded along with a summary of research (within a page length) for each publication.

4. For shortlisted candidates, the following documents must be sent via post:

  1. Original Certificates of Graduation & Transcripts from B.A., M.A., J.D. (if you have any) and Ph.D. (or equivalent)
  2. Two letters of recommendation (from professors or professionals in the same program or field)
    – The applicant must provide contact information of their recommenders as part of the online application.
    – The HASS Office will send recommendation requests to the recommenders’ email addresses provided by applicants.
    – An image file (e.g., .pdf, .jpg) of the recommender’s stamp or signature should be included in the response email for your recommendation. If the signature is included in a file format that is editable (e.g., .hwp, .doc), it will not be accepted.
    – The applicant’s full name and the name of the school/program to which the applicant is applying must be specified in the letter
  3. Originals or copies of all publications dated after March 1, 2021 (may send them via post only in case of failing submission of files through the online system).
